Introduction

Reducing stillbirths and improving bereavement care has been identified as a national and local priority.

Progress to date

  • National work:Y&H CN work is linked with the National ‘Saving Babies Lives’ Project to facilitate implementation of the national care bundle and prevent any duplication with Y&H recommendations. The National Team has agreed 4 elements for inclusion in the National Stillbirth Care Bundle: Smoking Cessation / Reduced Fetal Movements / Small for Gestational Age / CTG Interpretation.

  • Pilot Sites: 11 out of 13 Trusts that provide maternity services in Y&H are pilot sits for the implementation of the National Stillbirth Care Bundlem and have completed benchmarking for their service against the care budle elements.


Recommendations for improving Stillbirth and Bereavement Care in Y&H:

  • developed following a review of evidence and discussions at a Y&H stakeholders stillbirth workshop to consider best practice recommendations. 
  • Stillbirth peer review process: A peer review process is currently being considered.

Engagement: Continued engagement with Provider Trusts to share good practice. Highlight report provided to Commissioners Forum, Maternity CEG and Maternity Strategy Group.

Networking Opportunity: for Trusts to share best practise and challenges. CN established an email network group for Trust’s bereavement midwives / contacts.
